Calendula is also known as the sunflower and is considered by many peoples to be a symbol of immortality. It is native to the Mediterranean region. The first records of its use as a medicinal plant can be found in the 12th century in the writings of Hildegard von Bingen. Traditionally, the flower is said to have skin-soothing and wound-healing properties. It is also used to treat minor burns and scars. The flowers contain flavonoids, carotenoids, bitter compounds, and saponins.
