Chamomile is one of the most versatile medicinal plants and was already being used by Hippocrates in the 5th century BC. It later found its way into European monastery gardens and was used externally to treat various skin problems. The flowers contain essential oil, flavonoids, and mucilage, which have a soothing and enveloping effect on the skin and mucous membranes. It also helps with inflammation and promotes wound healing. The active ingredients in chamomile, bisabolol and chamazulene, have been proven to stimulate cell metabolism and promote regeneration.
